  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from PK -- Update : Update on previous review. Didn't keep the Kindle version after all. Amazon needs to match the 'Look inside' presentation with the actual Kindle book. The hieroglyphs were quite discernible on 'Look inside' but tiny, useless and not enlargeable in the actual Kindle. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from ACM -- Greatly enjoyed this book : I’ve known a bit about the Rosetta Stone without having a satisfying understanding of how it was cracked. This book satisfied my curiosity, explaining in easy prose how ancient Egyptian writing became readable to 19th century scholars. Smoothly written, sometimes funny, it clearly guided me through the achievements of competing geniuses, an Englishman and a Frenchman, in bringing Egypt of the pharaohs back in view. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Nathaniel R. Brown -- Sloppy research, questionable detail : A great pity that such a fascinating story should be so carelessly told; I was unable to finish a book which is so careless with detail and so cavalier about adding details either made up, impossible, or wrong. A few examples, taken from just three or four pages, should suffice: ( Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Avid Reader -- Kindle version is fantastic : By all means get the kindle version of this book. There are many illustrations that can be expanded with a touch that go to great links to explain the writing. The author continually suggest that this translation or should I say decipherment is on the same order as mathematical theorems. But it won’t send it’s even more difficult since it involves an artistic touch with lots of imagination. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from cheesedog -- Superb! : Dolnick moves what could have been a dry slog at the pace of a thriller his explanations of some complex issues are marvelously understandable ( Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Harry -- Kindle edition the best : This is one of the most readable (and enjoyable) book I've read in a while. Its a wealth of information on the subject presented in digestible bites. The illustrations were enlargeable simply by left clicking (Windows 10 OS) and could be further enlarges by using my fingers on my touchscreen. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from B. Rockefeller -- Cannot put it down! : One of the most engrossing books I have ever read. This guy can write! No showing off. All digressions are pointedly relevant. I am now going straight to the author's other Amazon entries to buy all of them, as well as two books he notes in the text. Writing like this is why we love books.
