• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Trent Holbrook -- Incredibly well written book on inequalities from historic geographic segregation and caste : I highly recommend this important and thoughtful book. Professor Cashin’s incredible work carefully traces the history of the American racial caste system that continues to impact our society, providing opportunity hoarding for those living in geographic spaces that, through government policy, became predominantly white, while neglecting those left to racial minorities, leaving little opportunity for advancement for those she rightfully calls “descendants.” She connects this history brilliantly with contemporary economic imbalance, lack of development and opportunity in poorer areas, and ongoing discriminatory policies, ending with a detailed call to action to help improve our unequal society. In analyses on topics ranging from economic development to housing and from education to policing and surveillance injustices, Professor Cashin’s impeccable research is matched by her enthralling storytelling abilities that helps make her important case.
